Loving God is the First Commandment

And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment.”  Matthew 22:37-38

The first commandment found in Matthew 22 is not “the great suggestion”. It is the great commandment. Through it God is telling us what matters most. The great commandment is in reality, an invitation into what we were created for. That is- to love God with all our heart, mind, soul and strength.

God calls us to love Him with all our heart, mind and strength, because that is how God loves us. God loves us with all of His heart, mind, and strength. Can you imagine being loved by the strength of God? When I think of God’s strength, I think of His creative powers-forming the universe, the vast oceans, the earth, and everything in them. And to think of all His strength behind His love and desire toward me! What could hold His love back? What a mind blowing suggestion. That God loves me with all of His heart, mind, and strength. More than a suggestion, it is the truth. If we would only believe and receive this truth concerning His love for us, it would revolutionize our lives.

It is encouraging to know that while I was in sin Christ loved and died for me (Romans 5:8). I pray that nothing will hold me back from responding to His love. That His love would ‘color’ all that I do and see. Oh that I would know the height, length and depth of His love! Come Holy Spirit. Reveal the deep things to me…
